My Ancestor

My Ancestor is a deeply personal piece, born from a journey of questioning, discovery, and reconnection. After years of inner work and a period of detachment from religion, I found myself reflecting on the spiritual legacy of my ancestors. Growing up in a Muslim environment, I questioned every aspect of religion, eventually stepping away from it entirely.

In Ramadan 2023, I felt a profound revelation—my ancestors' energy was unsettled by my disconnection. While I may not hold the same beliefs, I realized that religion had been a source of strength and guidance for them for generations. By Ramadan 2024, I chose to fast the entire month, dedicating it to honoring my ancestors and their spiritual journey. My grandmother, who passed in 2020, felt deeply present during this time, inspiring me to create this painting in their memory.

The colors and patterns in this piece are a celebration of Moroccan culture, evoking the depth and authenticity of zellij, the intricate geometric tilework that symbolizes the creativity of Moroccan craftsmanship. The character of Nothing, central to my work, is adorned in a traditional Moroccan caftan, representing femininity, grace, and the enduring legacy of my roots.
